Many people are nervous about going to the dentist, because they don’t like to have their mouths poked and prodded. However, the minor inconvenience of a biannual cleaning is much less invasive than the root canal that will come if you don’t take care of your teeth. Going to the dentist twice a year is the best way to keep a healthy set of teeth.

After brushing your teeth, you should always remember to rinse your toothbrush out with water. When storing your brush, try to find a storage container that will allow your brush to stay upright and air dry. If you place your wet brush into a container with a lid, bacteria has an easier time to grow.

If you are scared of an upcoming dental procedure, talk with your dentist and determine a signal to let them know you are going to need a break. You might be able to settle on a special hand signal for it. Often, you won’t need to take this step, but just knowing it is an option will help you relax.

Do you have bad breath? You should clean your tongue more regularly. Invest in some tongue scrapers and use them after each meal to remove bacterias from your tongue. Rinsing your mouth with an anti-bacterial mouth wash can help too. If the problem persists, go to your dentist to find out what is causing your bad breath.

When picking out your next tooth brush, make sure to avoid one that is too hard. Professionals recommend that you use either a soft or medium-soft brush regularly. The hard bristles can be way too tough on your gums and can also wear away at the enamel covering your teeth!

Looking into a tongue piercing? Don’t! Piercing your tongue can actually cause quite a bit of damage to your mouth. Furthermore, oral piercings of any kind can chip the enamel on your teeth and make you more vulnerable to infection. If unchecked, you may also have to have some of your tongue removed, which isn’t the greatest look in the world.

It’s imperative that you brush correctly. Brush in the morning and at bedtime. While you sleep, saliva dries, keeping the bacteria that cause cavities away. You need to be brushing for two minutes or longer, and you need to brush at 45 degree angles.

If you are not sure which dentist to visit, talk to the people that you know. Chances are, if a family member or friend has had a good experience with a dentist, you will too. You can also speak with your doctor or check online to find possibilities that might be suitable.

Watch out when you are using any products that contain sugar, since this can lead to tooth decay. While many people think of candy and other desserts as the only culprits, you should also be concerned about your consumption of gum, cough drops, beverages and anything else that has a large amount of sugar in it.

Before visiting your dentist, write down a list of your concerns. At the dentist, it is easy to forget your questions and concerns. If you have a list, you can get all your questions answered. Your appointment is a perfect time to ask about dental hygiene or concerns you may have.

Get your kids excited about brushing their teeth. There are many great videos out there that can not only show your kids how to brush their teeth, but also why it is so important. Watching other kids and characters that they like displaying good dental care habits, will hopefully motivate them to do the same.

Brush all of the surfaces of your teeth. Many people think that they only need to clean the surfaces that are visible, but bacteria likes to hide on the hidden parts of teeth. These are the areas where various dental problems can occur. When you brush, make sure to brush the outside, inside, and chewing surfaces of every tooth.

If your child hasn’t been to the dentist before, or if he or she is a little nervous about the appointment, play dentist one day. Try to put yourself in the dentist’s shoes, and envision your child as the patient. Take a toothbrush and move it around their mouth, examining their teeth. After you have finished, encourage your child to play dentist with a stuffed toy or doll.

Avoid eating sticky sweets that may get stuck between your teeth and hard foods that can crack them. Smoking and drinking certain beverages, like red wine and coffee can stain your teeth. Eat a high calcium diet and get an adequate amount of Vitamin C. Crunchy fruits and vegetables can clean your teeth naturally.

Use apple cider vinegar as a mouthwash in the morning. This is an excellent way for you to get fresh breath, but more than that, apple cider vinegar can also get rid of stains on your teeth and make your teeth appear brighter. Apple cider vinegar is very inexpensive, so this is a wonderful tool in your dental care.

Always thoroughly rinse your toothbrush after using it because the germs that you just removed from your mouth will be on the toothbrush. By rinsing it off, you will remove the germs and the remnants of old toothpaste which can build up. Follow up the rinse by tapping the toothbrush on the edge of the sink to shake excess water off of it.

Keep a close eye on the health of your mouth. You are the one that lives with your mouth and are most able to realize that something is not right. If you notice any pain or swelling you should seek the advice of your dentist as soon as you can.

As was stated earlier, a lot of people have nerves about heading to the dentist. The only thing to be nervous about, though, is the trouble that builds up in your mouth the longer you go without getting your teeth cleaned. Root canals and other forms of mouth surgery are more likely if you neglect your cleaning schedule.
